Gig Review- Yothu Yindi, Darwin Amphitheatre, 8 August 2019
Yothu Yindi open the Darwin Festival at the Amphitheatre, 8 Aug 2019
Northern Territory musical talent smashed it with a night of energy, passion and dancing under the stars at the opening of Darwin Festival on Thursday 8 August 2019. Following a far-too-long absence, Yothu Yindi performed a sensational, inspirational and mesmerizing set. Their powerful songs in Yolgnu Matha language, and their pride and love for their culture, traditions and music were on full display. Their hugely successful “Treaty” echoed around the Amphitheatre after it wound up the set, while political debate and disagreement over a treaty continues on the Australian political stage.
Supporting artist Caiti Baker performed a soulful, sultry set with a touch of swing and some sing-along moments, and Adrian Eagle shared some hip-hop love as another sensational dry-season sunset coloured the sky.
The Darwin Festival celebrates its 40 th birthday this year, with a jam-packed program of “hot August nights” (and days) crammed full of music, dance, art, theatre, circus, comedy and cabaret from 8-25 August.
With its 40-year history, the Darwin Festival is a well-loved, eagerly anticipated, readily accessible, relaxed and family-friendly highlight of the dry season. Darwin’s “winter” nights with temperatures below 20 degrees (yikes!) have been and gone, and the humidity and heavy rains of the wet season are still a few months away. It is the perfect time to be in
Darwin and be outdoors. The gently sloping lawns of the Amphitheatre, in the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, were filled with blankets, picnics, families and fold-up chairs for the FREE opening night extravaganza. Food trucks provided supplies for the less-prepared. The mosh-pit, that might have stretched to 10-deep, was a fun
space to get up close and personal with the sensational talent on stage and share the energy with fellow music lovers.
There’s certainly nothing like a 40th birthday celebration to bring all your friends and fans together for a huge, free night of music under the stars.
