Gig Review: Tones and I, Rod Laver Arena, Saturday 9 November, 2024
Multi-ARIA-Award winner and local Melbournite, Tones And I, brought her ‘Beautifully Ordinary’ headline tour back home to Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena last night. The final show in her Australia and New Zealand tour, saw a sold out stadium packed with fans ranging of all ages!
Tonight’s show was more than impressive and blew away any reservations on whether our Frankston local can hold a crowd. From support act Illy, who got the packed crowd dancing from the first ‘Melbourne, let’s hear some noise’ to the final credits rolling on the screen, tonight’s was truly entertaining and a sublime production!
Getting the crowd pepped up, saw fellow Melbournian and ARIA award winner, Illy, take the stage. Smashing through his back catalogue and even paying homage to the Hilltop Hoods, saw the crowd responding to one of Australia’s favourite rappers. The high energetic and lively set, proved to the crowd why he was on tonight’s bill.
Walking down the stage stairs in the shadows of the hanging blinds, saw Tones and I being received by the cheering crowd. With a choir supporting her entrance, Tones proved to the crowd just why she is being praised for this latest tour. Tones certainly showcased the power of her vocal chords which not only dismissed her being a “one hit wonder”, but showed a variety of styles that certainly has contributed to her ongoing success. Playing songs from her recent album as well as much loved favourites, Dance, Monkey, Fly Away, Cloudy Day and Never Seen the Rain.
Special mention to special guest Olympian Raygun who jumped on stage to a cheering crowd. Joining in the festivities albeit a brief spotlight on stage.
This gig was not just about Tones and I and her musicianship though. From the visually stunning backdrops, the stunning choreography of the dancers, the Tones and I choir and a stage full of additions just for this final show, was visually and aurally sublime. The creative direction of this gig was world class. Kudos to Creative Director, Sela Vai and her team, for creating such a beautifully choreographed piece of art.
Tones and I’s show tonight was more than just a gig. It was a highly entertaining, visually stunning show that ticked all the boxes making it one of the most entertaining shows I have seen this year.
