Gig Review: Circles “Winter Tour”, Max Watts, Melbourne, 13 July 2019
The night began with a small crowd pouring into the warmth of Max Watts Melbourne from the icy cold streets. First up on Circles The ‘Winter’ Tour was Caution Thieves from Melbourne. During the set the crowd slowly grew and at the beckoning of singer Nicholas’ request. The pit and stage were not only bustling with photographers/film crew but the astounding energy from the band whirling around the stage. The majority of the set was focused on songs from their new album ‘The Blueprint For Moving Forward’ on Friday July 26th 2019. The band was entirely appreciative of the crowd’s eagerness and participation in the pit.
Next up on the stage was Ebonivory. The Ballarat boys who not only delighted the ears of the punters, but also delighted the eyes of many. Originally formed in 2014, despite only being about 5 years old, this band has the sound, energy and the absolute tightness of a band well beyond this timeframe. Everything was not only a visual delight but an overall sensory overload with the epic lead vocals of Charlie Powlett. I could not fault this band and you could see this experience was shared when scanning the faces in the crowd.
Third band to hit the stage was Rival Fire who also are from Melbourne. Coming off the back of the release of their new single Lost (14 June 2019). The crowd surged with the power of a packed room. With excellently matched harmonies dripping over menacing but tasty dark rock vibes, the band works well together in and almost liquid manner with their interactions on the stage.
I have had the absolute privilege of tagging along on a tour that Circles were the support for Ne Obliviscaris back in 2018. I have probably seen them more than any other band in my life. Despite my repeated viewing of them, I have never ever grown tired, been bored or not been absolutely awestruck by their always entertaining/eargasmic performance. From Ben on some of the best lead vocal pipes on offer in this industry whilst shredding like a King on guitar, to Ted ripping shreds to his guitar with brilliant harmonies/backing vocals, stage tornado Drew is a bass god and is never in one spot at the same time whilst maintaining his balance and occasionally screaming into the mike, and finally Dave on drums who pulls the most incredible facials whilst destroying on drums. This band just continues to improve each time I see them, who thought that could be possible as each time I have seen them has always felt like their best show.Unfortunately, there was an incident with a member of the crowd being injured during the show (I will not go into detail out of respect) the band stopped playing to ensure that the person who was hurt was tended to by paramedics and taken to hospital before continuing the show.The guys took back to the stage after the pit was cleared to the roar of the audience; the crowd continued to head bang and soak up the incredible show that they were blessed with seeing in front of them. Coming back to do an encore of one final song for the demanding crowd to quench their thirst for all that is Circles.
