Gig Review- Steel Panther- Boobs Out, Balls Out and Rock ‘n’ Roll

Within minutes of Steel Panther being on stage, a flash of boobs from a buxom blonde had the band raring to go. They did question if she was of legal age so they could ogle at them for a moment more, but of course she was; this was an 18+ event for a reason. You just knew from the first nipple, that it was going to be in the gutter from this moment forward.

For those unaware of the brilliance that is Steel Panther, it can be a rather eye opening experience to say the very least. Forming as a comedic glam rock cover band that gained popularity the early 2000’s, they released several albums of originals that included crass and very politically incorrect songs about hookers, back door entries and every piece of sexual innuendo that you can imagine. And this is why last night at the Forum Theatre, was their first sold out show of two in the most musical city in the world- Melbourne, Australia.

Steel Panther sashayed on stage for their first set of the night… striking poses in front of their industrial fans, reminiscent of an 80’s film clip on MTV, well a late night adults only version of MTV anyway. I lost count how many times the word vagina was used in a 5 minute chat before blasting out classics like “Going in the Backdoor” “Asian Hooker”, and “Just like Tiger Woods”. It was around this time that the aforementioned “Buxom Blonde” was invited on stage so the crowd could have another gawk of her full-uncovered buxomness much to the delight of the audience! Serenading Ms Buxom, lead vocals Michael Starr (Ralph Saenz) gave a rocking rendition of “Glory Hole” and “Community Property”

After a short 20-minute break, Steel Panther returned to the stage with fresh lycra and rip tees to have a cover set of heavy rock classics. Starting the set with “Kick Start my Heart”, the crowd lapped it up and the hits kept on coming; from Van Halen , AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses and of course Motley Crue. Steel Panther were on fire and the diehard fans were relishing every moment. There was plenty of sexy fancy dancing and singing happening from the mixed aged concert goers.
Apart from the comedy act that is Steel Panther, it is sometimes overlooked at how musically talented each of these guys actually are. Each one having their own glam rock alter ego, the band consists of lead vocals Michael Starr (Ralph Saenz), drummer Stix Zadinia (Darren Leader), lead guitar and back-up vocals Satchel (Russ Parrish) and the effeminate and beautiful bass player Lexi Foxx (Travis Haley). At times Saenz vocals were stretched more than the lycra over his sock filled crotch. The notes that he reached were indicative of the glam rock era that were mocking on stage and he did it with ease. Their harmonies were impeccable and the band were a tight outfit (much like the ones they were wearing).

Tonight’s gig was definitely an unique experience. One of comedic mastery and timing as well as superb musical talent. It was easy to see how they sold so many shows on their Australian “Sunset Strip” tour.
